Urban Wear As Hip-Hop Music’s Big Business Horizon

Urban wear and hip-hop music have always had a special relationship. The emergence of the culture and the music that came to be during the close of the 20th century heavily influenced the art and the clothing of the day.

In the same way that people see more unique types of clothing appear in music videos and on rap icons, so too have these same individuals begun to contribute their own flavor to fashion. It is common for labels to be under the leadership of a famous rapper or hip-hop producer, and in effect expanding their business to the urban clothing ventures.

Hip-hop musicians enter the business of urban wear largely because of this form of attire’s power to become a fruitful business venture. Most music artists signed to a record label are paid large sums for their recorded work, but may not see more money until the label recoups the expenses paid to promote them. Artists can opt to invest in a variety of ventures, and urban clothing has become a popular outlet for this.

It is a means for them to diversify their income, and to make their money work for them. It also ties in neatly to the public persona and self-expression that they deliver to their fans, and their exploits become ways to market their clothes. Sean John (P. Diddy), Apple Bottoms (Nelly), Rocawear (Jay-Z) and G-Unit (50 Cent) are all managed by rappers, and many other urban wear labels have grown in popularity as rappers continue to make a name for themselves and their music.
